CONCUSSION

3 R's in concussion care: Recognize, Report, and Recover.

Introduction

As a physical therapist, helping individuals recover from concussions is one of our specialties. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that can occur as a result of a blow to the head, neck or body. It can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, and difficulty with concentration and memory.

Physical therapists play an important role in the recovery process for individuals who have suffered from a concussion. Here are some of the things we do in concussion therapy:

1. Thorough Assessment

First and foremost, we conduct a detailed assessment of the individual's symptoms, their overall physical health, and any other factors that may affect their recovery. This includes balance, vision, coordination, strength, and cognitive function.

2. Individualized Treatment Plan

Based on the results of the assessment, we create an individualized treatment plan. This plan will include specific exercises and techniques to help improve balance, eye movements, and other physical and cognitive functions that may be affected by the concussion.

3. Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation is a type of therapy that focuses on improving the function of the vestibular system. The vestibular system is responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. Following a concussion, it's common for the vestibular system to be disrupted, resulting in dizziness, imbalance, and difficulty with movement. Vestibular rehabilitation exercises can help to restore normal functioning.

4. Visual Therapy

Because concussions can also affect vision, visual therapy can be particularly helpful. We use specialized exercises to improve eye tracking, focusing, and depth perception.

5. Gradual Return to Activities & Sports

Depending on the severity of the concussion, it may be necessary to gradually return to activities and sports. We work closely with our patients to develop a plan that eases them back into physical activity without putting them at risk of re-injury.

Conclusion

In conclusion, physical therapists play an essential role in concussion therapy. We work with individuals to assess their symptoms and develop individualized treatment plans to help them recover. Through a combination of exercises, therapies, and gradual reintroduction to activities, we can help individuals regain the function and quality of life they had prior to their concussion.
